The 19th Annual Mutual Fund Industry Awards

The 19th Annual Mutual Fund Industry Awards recognize the funds, fund leaders, marketers, trustees and independent counsel who stood out for their successes, achievements and contributions in 2011.

Nominees were announced online on February 3rd and in the February 6th issue of Fund Director Intelligence and Fund Industry Intelligence and will be honored and awarded at our annual awards dinner and ceremony on April 5, 2012, at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City.

This year's event also celebrates the Rising Stars of Mutual Funds. Nominated by their managers, colleagues and mentors, the 'Rising Stars' are selected by the publishers of Institutional Investor Intelligence as up-and-coming professionals poised to be future thought leaders. Expect Miracles Awards
At this year's awards dinner, our charity partner the Expect Miracles Foundation (formerly Mutual Funds Against Cancer) presents their 3nd Annual Expect Miracles Awards. These awards recognized the individuals and firms within the financial community for their outstanding support, commitment and dedication in the fight against cancer and/or cancer-patient care programs.

Expect Miracles Foundation (formerly Mutual Funds Against Cancer) 3rd Annual Expect Miracles Awards will be presented at Fund Industry Intelligence and Fund Director Intellgience’s 19th Annual Mutual Funds Industry Awards on April 5, 2012 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in NYC.

The Expect Miracles Awards are presented on an annually basis to individuals and firms within the financial community who have demonstrated outstanding support, commitment and dedication, as it relates to the fight against cancer and/or support of cancer- patient care programs. Nominees are individuals/firms whose behavior and actions separate them as role models for others within our industry.

Last year’s categories of recognition include:
- Corporate Commitment Award: Recognizes a firm that has demonstrated an organizational commitment to the fight against cancer.
- Company for a Cure Award: Recognizes a firm for an innovative initiative or event in 2011 that helped to further cancer awareness and raise funds for cancer-related programs.
- Miracle Maker Leadership Award: Recognizes an individual at an executive or board level who has demonstrated long-standing personal leadership in cancer advocacy.
- Inspiration Contributor Award: Recognizes an individual whose personal efforts helped to ensure the success of a cancer-related project, event, or fundraising initiative in 2011.

Fund Industry Intelligence's Lifetime Achievement Award

Fund Industry Intelligence's Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to an individual who, over the course of their career, has been a driving force behind positive changes in the fund industry. Past winners include industry icons Jack Bogle of Vanguard and Franklin's Michael Price. Last year's recipient was MFS Investment Management's Robert Pozen.

Fund Leader of the Year

The Fund Leader of the Year is awarded to an individual who has made a key impact on their firm or the industry as a whole. This person will be the driving force behind a product or initiative that helps to turnaround their firm's fortunes, increase assets or have industry-wide implications.

Fund Marketer of the Year

The Fund Marketer of the Year award goes to individuals who have led innovative campaigns and/or strategies at their firms that have contributed to measurable improvements in areas such as inflows, investor perceptions and market share.

Retirement Leader of the Year

Retirement Leader of the Year is awarded to a firm that has made a key impact on growing retirement assets with unique retirement solutions, marketing campaigns and significant contributions to the retirement industry at large.

Deal of the Year

Deal of the Year is awarded to the M&A deal of 2011 that has most changed the landscape of the fund industry.

Sales Success of the Year

Sales Success of the Year is awarded to an individual fund or line of funds that, whether through performance or sales strategy or a combination of both, has registered a dramatic increase in flows.

Ad Campaign of the Year

Ad Campaign of the Year is awarded to the most innovative and attention-grabbing advertising effort by a fund industry player.

Fund Director Intelligence Awards Criteria

Fund Director Intelligence' Lifetime Achievement Award

Fund Director Intelligence' Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a director with a distinguished tenure in the industry. Past winners include Andrew Donohue, the former director of the Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Investment Management and David S. Ruder, Chairman of the Mutual Fund Directors Forum.

Trustee of the Year

Trustee of the Year recognizes a director for outstanding accomplishments in the previous year, either with their own board or for the mutual fund industry in general. Past winners have led their boards on important issues such as fund mergers, fees, regulation and director education outside the boardroom.

Small Board Trustee of the Year

Small Board Trustee of the Year recognizes a director who serves on boards that oversee under $20 billion in assets. The criteria for nomination are the same as for Trustee of the Year.

Independent Counsel of the Year

Independent Counsel of the Year is presented to a lawyer for outstanding representation of independent directors during the previous 12 months. Nominees are seen as knowledgeable, trustworthy, accessible and/or proactive.
